Spelling: Homework due Fri; Test Fri. Tomorrow's Specials: Art/STEM Crazy Hat and Socks Day tomorrow! Happy first day of fall! I can't believe we have already been in school for a little over a month! We have been busy learning a lot in third grade! In math, we are wrapping up our study of 3-digit addition and subtraction by applying those skills to word problems. Once we finish that, we will begin our study of telling time to the nearest minute. In second grade, they learned how to tell time to the nearest 5 minutes, so we will build on that knowledge and become self-sufficient clock readers! In this digital age, we have discovered that children do not have as many opportunities to practice that skill, so if you have any analog clocks at home (the kind with the hour and minute hands), please encourage your child to practice telling the time with that clock, rather than the digital clocks that exist everywhere, from cell phones, to tablets, to computers. If you don't have any analog clocks at home, perhaps a fun analog clock that matches your child's bedroom or playroom would make a great gift idea! There are also some free analog clock apps for phones, too, so that's another option.
In science, we are wrapping up our study of matter and will soon begin our study of government in social studies. We have also been focusing on our social and emotional health through the Too Good for Violence program, which is taught once a week by Denise Ellis from Recovery and Prevention Resources of Delaware and Morrow Counties. In writing, we have been working on generating ideas for writing, and will soon be ready to begin working on paragraph writing. In reading, each reading group started with a fiction picture book, during which we focused on summarizing. Some groups have already begun their next book, a nonfiction book with a focus on identifying the main ideas and supporting details in the text. I encourage you to ask your child to tell you about the books we have been reading in our reading groups! During our literacy stations, we have gotten started with one of my absolute favorites--Weekly Reading Blogs! Each week, the students post a blog entry about the book they are currently reading independently, or one that they recently finished, on a program called Kidblog. Kidblog is a secure student blogging program, which means that only students in our class can view and comment on their posts. I encourage you to ask your child to log into Kidblog and show you what they have written so far! The focus right now is just on the content of the students' posts and how to follow all instructions for the task, so don't worry about spelling, capitalization, grammar, and punctuation errors just yet...we will work on writing more polished posts once we are more familiar with Kidblog and completing the task. We will also be working on those skills during weekly grammar and editing lessons, so those things will continue to develop over time. I love to see what the students are thinking about the books they are reading, and I also love that the kids get to discover good books through reading their classmates' posts. Many of the kids end up choosing their next book because they became interested in it when they read a classmate's post about it on Kidblog. That, to me, is the best part of this---generating excitement for reading! :-) I am still waiting on the green light from the office to post pictures...so as soon as the data is shared with teachers from the photo release forms that were completed at the beginning of the year, I will post all of the pictures that I have taken of our learning in action so far.
