Reading: Reading Log - 20 min. Spelling: Homework due Fri; Test Fri. Tomorrow's Specials: PE/Music Community Library Wednesday! I absolutely cannot believe the school year is half over already! During November and December, we studied government, safety & first aid, and started a study of nutrition & fitness that we are currently wrapping up. We will begin our study of world geography and cultures next week, during which we will learn the locations of all of the continents and oceans and "travel" to China, Italy, and Mexico to learn about the cultures in those countries! During Writing Workshop, the students have been learning about the different writing genres and how to choose the genre that best fits their self-selected topic and message. We love our Writing Workshop time...some of the students are so excited about their current works-in-progress that they are choosing to work on them at home, too! We currently have many students working on informational texts, some working on personal narratives, and a few are writing fictional narratives. Many students have already submitted drafts for "publishing," so I will be meeting with them individually over the next few weeks to help them revise and edit their drafts to get them ready for printing! We have been reading lots of books and working on identifying the setting and point of view and analyzing character traits in fiction, and we have been identifying the main idea and supporting details in nonfiction texts. We will soon be discussing theme and comparing and contrasting two texts on the same topic. Now that our winter assessments are finished and winter break is over, all of the kiddos are anxious to begin reading and discussing new books with their reading groups! We are nearing the end of our study of multiplication in math....we began our study of the 11's fact group on Friday, to be continued on Monday, and then we will work on the 12's facts. I will be meeting with any students who have not mastered some of the previous fact groups to give them some extra practice and support, so hopefully they will conquer all of the fact groups soon! Please check your child's Multiplication Mastery chart (in the yellow folder) to see which fact groups they have mastered (the ones with a sticker on the chart) and which ones they still need to work on (the ones without a sticker on the chart). The students have a variety of tools for extra practice--the flash cards in their yellow folder, the multiplication games on our class website (click here), and simple games that you can play at home with a standard deck of cards or dice (see the Math Fact Games file below). Once we are finished studying multiplication, we will have an ice cream sundae party to celebrate our hard work and accomplishments in multiplication fact fluency! I will send home more information about the ice cream sundae party later. Then we will be ready to study division! Below you will find pictures from November and December. I have been attempting to post pictures since the end of November, but between slow internet at home and the busyness of the holiday season, I was never able to find a long enough chunk of time to get it done until now! Luckily, I recently discovered that Weebly has a mobile app that will allow me to post pictures directly from my phone, so hopefully that will make it easier for me to post pictures more frequently from now on--fingers crossed! Roll over each picture below to read a caption. Enjoy!
